The Shining is my number one favorite story of all time. I have read the book multiple times and I have seen the movie countless times. Each time I consume the story in whatever form, I am able to relive the horror of the first time experiencing the story.
There are many that believe that Stephen King was speaking to his alcoholism through the story. While that is possible, I don't fully buy it. When the story was written, Stephen King will in full alcoholic form. I do not think that most alcoholics would admit to themselves that they are alcoholics. So, I don't think that Stephen King would write with that intent during the time he was an alcoholic.
It is possible that the message was an unconscious one. More likely, King later in life, after taking control of his alcoholism might create that perception. Never the less, the Shining is an amazing tale of possession and insanity intertwined into a thrill rise that does not disappoint.
Still my favorite story ever!
